The German Bundesliga 22/23 season

FC Bayern Munich will look to extend their Bundesliga title winning streak to 11 consecutive seasons after emerging victorious over the 21/22 season.

There hasn’t been a different Bundesliga winner since 2012 when a dynamic Borussia Dortmund team, led by current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, sealed their second consecutive title.

This DFL season will see new global superstars plying their trade in Germany. Notable additions to the league include Sadio Mane and Matthijs de Ligt moving to Bayern Munich and Ajax sensation Sebastian Haller joining Borussia Dortmund.

However, several big names have left the division, including its two finest strikers - Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.

German Bundesliga 22/23: The key teams

FC Bayern Munich are once again the heavy favorites to reclaim the league for a record 11th time in a row. If you fancy an outsider bet, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen are in with a decent shout.

Bayern Munich: (1.14 betting odds - favorite)

Bayern Munich remain one of the titans of world football and this clearly shows in their betting line.

Germany’s most successful football club have moved swiftly to replace outgoing stars Robert Lewandowski, Niklas Sule and Corentin Tolisso with proven seniors Sadio Mane and Matthijs de Ligt.

Fans can also catch a glimpse of the future in up-and-coming talent Ryan Gravenberch and Mathys Tel, the most-expensive 17-year-old in history.

Borussia Dortmund: (8.43 betting odds – second favorite)

Bundesliga runners-up for three of the last four seasons, Borussia Dortmund are likely to be Bayern’s main threat this year.

While they may have lost star man Erling Haaland, Dortmund have managed to hold on to their other sought-after stars like Jude Bellingham and moved swiftly to reinvest the Haaland transfer fee.

BVB have also recruited another young star in the making in Karim Adayemi, who joins from Haaland’s former club Red Bull Salzburg. The German forward hit 19 league goals for Salzburg last season, becoming the top under-21 goalscorer in Europe.

RB Leipzig: (10.90 betting odds – third favorite)

New kids on the block RB Leipzig have already kicked up a stir in German football after rising from the fifth-tier to the Bundesliga in just seven seasons.

The Red Bull-owned side secured their first major trophy after winning the DFB-Pokal domestic cup last season and finished 4th in the Bundesliga.

The key players (Bet now with Cloudbet)

Christopher Nkunku – RB Leipzig

24-year-old Christopher Nkunku will look to emulate his best season yet which saw the French forward rack up a record 10 Man of the Match awards and earn the Bundesliga Player of the Season accolade.

With a haul of 20 goals and 13 assists in the Bundesliga, Nkunku could find himself topping the scoring charts in the absence of Lewandowski and Haaland.

Thomas Muller – Bayern Munich

It’s hard to believe that Bayern Munich mainstay Thomas Muller is still only 32 as he enters his 15th season in the German top flight.

Germany’s most decorated footballer has hit 18+ assists in his past three seasons and recently signed a contract extension through to 2024.

An in-form Thomas Muller usually translates to an in-form Bayern Munich, so expect another dominant season from the champions if this man is at his peak.

Patrick Schik - Bayer Leverkusen

Last season’s second-top scorer Patrick Schik fired Bayer Leverkusen to a third-placed finish with 24 goals.

The Czech has age on his side at 26 years old and has taken his game to the next level since ending the Euro 2020 Championships as joint-top scorer.

Talking Points This Season

Will the giants slip up? Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have coasted to their last three titles with relative ease and don’t look like slowing down. However, not all of their titles in the last decade have come so smoothly.

The 2018/19 race went down to the wire between Bayern and Dortmund, with the former holding on to a slender two-point lead with three games to go.

The big question on everyone’s lips this season is - will the German giants finally falter? The departure of frontline talisman Robert Lewandowski, who registered an average 0.94 goals per game since 2014, could blow the title race wide open.

Goals Galore - Europe’s highest scoring league

There’s a reason why the Bundesliga has shot up in popularity over the past decade. German football fans are usually in for a goal-fest as the league has maintained the highest goals-per-game rate in Europe for four of the last five seasons.

While Robert Lewandowski, the league’s top scorer for six of the past seven seasons, may have left, expect the Bundesliga to be action-packed this year as usual.

Would-be Champions - Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen

Should Bayern Munich have an off-season, there are ambitious and hungry teams just below them waiting for an opportunity.

The bookies have Dortmund and Leipzig at a similar outside price of 8.43 and 10.90 respectively, while Bayer Leverkusen are the dark horses at 25.00.

In terms of securing a Top Four spot, BVB, Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen will have eager contenders snapping at their heels in the shape of Borussia Monchengladbach (3.44), Eintracht Frankfurt (3.79) and VfL Wolfsburg (3.80).

Top Goalscorer - Mane, Schick and Nkunku

With perennial goal machines Lewandowski and Haaland out of the picture, the race for top scorer is up for grabs.

Sadio Mane is the Cloudbet favorite at 6.39, followed by Patrick Schik (8.85) and Christopher Nkunku (9.30).

Outsider bets worth a punt include Karim Adayemi (15.0), Serge Gnabry (15.5) and Thomas Muller (23.20).

Talented Youngsters to Watch

As you would expect from the Bundesliga, some of the most exciting young players in world football will light up the division this season.

Ryan Gravenberch - Bayern Munich

20-year-old Ryan Gravenberch has impressed as part of a resurgent Ajax team, stepping in to fill the void left by Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutch center-mid could line up alongside Bayern maestro Joshua Kimmich this season as part of a youthful, energetic midfield engine.

Youssoufa Moukoko - Borussia Dortmund

Youssoufa Moukoko is considered by many at Dortmund as an able replacement for outgoing striker Haaland. Still only 17 years old, Moukoko has scored goals by the truckload at youth level.

The striker currently holds the record as the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history after netting just 28 days after his 16th birthday.

Florian Wirtz - Bayer Leverkusen

Florian Wirtz played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s third-placed finish, offering creativity and energy in an advanced midfield role.

Wirtz was touted for a big-club move this summer but suffered an ACL injury in March. The playmaker will hope to catch form and build on an impressive 17 goal contributions last season.
