The Premier League returns later than usual in August with one central question. Can Arsenal retain the trophy, or will a reshaped chasing pack stop Mikel Arteta’s side?
Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for the title in 2025/26, finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City. The summer has since brought major changes, including Pep Guardiola’s departure from City and Andoni Iraola’s move to Liverpool.
This Premier League 2026/27 season preview covers the confirmed dates, promoted clubs and leading title contenders.

When does the 2026/27 Premier League season start?
The Premier League start date for 2026 is Friday, August 21. Arsenal begin their title defense at home to newly promoted Coventry City, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. BST.
The opening round runs through Monday, August 24. It begins a week later than the previous campaign because the expanded FIFA World Cup does not finish until July 19, leaving only 33 days between the World Cup final and the domestic opener.

Arsenal begin their title defense
Arsenal were confirmed as champions in Matchweek 37 after Manchester City drew at Bournemouth. They lifted the trophy following a 2-1 final-day win at Crystal Palace and finished with 85 points.
Retaining the Premier League brings a different challenge. Every opponent will target the champions, while Arsenal must again manage a demanding Champions League schedule. Arteta’s greatest advantage is continuity as City, Liverpool, and Chelsea all start the season under new managers.
Arsenal have not retained the English championship since winning three consecutive titles between 1932/33 and 1934/35. The Arsenal title defense in 2026/27 therefore offers a chance to end another long wait.
Who will challenge Arsenal for the title?
Manchester City remain the most obvious challenger. They finished second and Erling Haaland won the Golden Boot with 27 goals, but Enzo Maresca must now succeed Guardiola. City still have title-winning quality, although the managerial change creates uncertainty.
Manchester United enter the discussion after finishing third under Michael Carrick. Bruno Fernandes registered a record 21 assists and won the Premier League Player of the Season award. Their return to the Champions League will place greater demands on a squad that played only 40 matches last season.
Liverpool finished fifth before replacing Arne Slot with Iraola, whose pressing style helped Bournemouth qualify for Europe. Liverpool have the talent to challenge, but their prospects may depend on how quickly the squad adapts.
Aston Villa should remain competitive after finishing fourth. Chelsea begin further back after a 10th-place finish, although Xabi Alonso will benefit from a season without European football.
For our early Premier League predictions for 2026/27, Arsenal are the narrow selection ahead of City. United and Liverpool form the next group, with Villa and Chelsea beginning as outsiders.
The promoted teams in the Premier League 2026/27
The promoted teams in the Premier League for 2026/27 are Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. They replace West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
| Promoted club | Route to promotion | Opening Premier League fixture |
| Coventry City | Championship champions | Away at Arsenal |
| Ipswich Town | Championship runners-up | Home to Sunderland |
| Hull City | Championship playoff winners | Home to Manchester United |
Coventry return after 25 years outside the top flight. Frank Lampard guided the Sky Blues to the Championship title, but their reward is an opener against Arsenal followed by games with Hull and Manchester City.
Ipswich earned automatic promotion as runners-up. Kieran McKenna stepped down after taking the club back up, leaving Gary O’Neil to lead the Premier League campaign.
Hull beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the playoff final, with Oli McBurnie scoring in second-half stoppage time. They are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2016/17, although their underlying Championship numbers raise concerns. Hull finished sixth while Opta’s expected-points model placed them 23rd.
All three newly promoted Premier League teams have challenging starts, so early results could influence the relegation market quickly.
Premier League opening weekend fixtures
Arsenal against Coventry is the headline game and a classic champions-versus-newcomers opener. Coventry won 3-0 at Arsenal on the opening weekend in 1993, with Micky Quinn scoring a hat trick, although repeating that result at the Emirates would be a major upset.
Hull host Manchester United on Saturday in their first top-flight match for nearly a decade. United will be expected to control the game, but a promoted club’s first home fixture can produce an intensity that makes short match odds less appealing.
Newcastle host Liverpool on Sunday in Iraola’s first competitive match as Liverpool head coach. The clash could interest bettors looking at goals or both-teams-to-score markets.

Toughest and easiest opening schedules
The Premier League’s Fixture Difficulty Ratings rank Liverpool’s opening five as the most favorable, while Bournemouth and Coventry have the toughest starts on paper.
| Team | First five Premier League fixtures | Opinion |
| Liverpool | Newcastle United (A), Nottingham Forest (H), Ipswich Town (A), Fulham (H), Bournemouth (A) | Easiest opening schedule. Liverpool have the league’s lowest average Fixture Difficulty Rating at 2.6 and avoid Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United across their first five matches. |
| Manchester United | Hull City (A), Ipswich Town (H), Everton (A), Manchester City (H), Fulham (A) | One of the easier starts. United open against both Hull and Ipswich before the Manchester derby provides their first major test. Their average rating of 2.8 is the joint second-lowest. |
| Manchester City | Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (A), Coventry City (H), Manchester United (A), Sunderland (H) | A favorable run overall. City have three home matches and face two newly promoted clubs. The trip to Old Trafford is the obvious exception. |
| Bournemouth | Manchester City (A), Everton (H), Newcastle United (A), Brentford (H), Liverpool (H) | Joint-toughest opening schedule. Bournemouth face City, Newcastle and Liverpool during the first five, producing an average Fixture Difficulty Rating of 3.6. |
| Coventry City | Arsenal (A), Hull City (H), Manchester City (A), Brighton (H), Nottingham Forest (A) | Joint-toughest opening schedule. The promoted side visit last season’s top two in their first three matches, making their return to the Premier League especially demanding. |
| Hull City | Manchester United (H), Coventry City (A), Aston Villa (H), Chelsea (A), Newcastle United (A) | Another difficult start for a promoted club. Four of Hull’s first five opponents finished in the upper half of the Premier League or qualified for European competition last season. |
