Vinicius Jr to Arsenal: Where the Transfer Actually Stands

Arsenal have made the most advanced attempt of any club this window to sign Vinicius Junior, and by Thursday the balance had swung back toward Real Madrid. David Ornstein reported on August 5 that Madrid had raised their contract offer, and both Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports News have since indicated the Brazilian is closing on a renewal. Nothing has been signed and no club has announced anything, though Madrid are reported to expect formal acceptance shortly.

Where the Vinicius Jr Arsenal Transfer Stands

Vinicius is in the final year of his Real Madrid deal, which runs to June 2027. Talks over an extension had been stalled for close to a year before restarting after the World Cup. He currently earns around €17.5 million a year, per ESPN. Madrid’s offer was worth around €22 million net, while his representatives were reported to be seeking a package closer to €30 million including bonuses, on the argument that at 26 this is the defining contract of his career.

That gap gave Arsenal their opening, and it is what Madrid moved to close on August 5. Ornstein reported an improved proposal said to reflect the player’s importance to the club and its project, leaving Vinicius to choose between renewing, running his contract down to free agency next summer, or taking the Arsenal move.

The reporting has firmed up since. Romano has described a face-to-face meeting in Madrid between Vinicius, his Roc Nation representatives and the Real Madrid board, and says an agreement for him to stay is close. Sky Sports News has reported he is set to remain at the Bernabéu. Ramón Álvarez de Mon, who covers Real Madrid, went further on August 6, reporting that an agreement had been reached and would be signed soon. Madrid are said to expect Vinicius to communicate his formal acceptance before any announcement follows, and The Independent has reported that Arsenal themselves now consider it increasingly likely he stays.

Why Arsenal Went All-In

Arsenal’s pursuit was serious and well advanced internally. Ornstein described the club as all-in, with Mikel Arteta driving it and the Kroenkes backing it, and reported that the finances had been calculated and approved at every level. Sporting director Andrea Berta spoke with the player’s camp, and Arsenal were prepared to break their wage structure, with a signing-on payment and an image-rights agreement forming part of the package.

The context explains the ambition. Arsenal won the 2025-26 Premier League, ending a 22-year wait, and reached the Champions League final. They then missed out on Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea for £117 million after Arsenal declined to match that fee. Leandro Trossard left for Besiktas and Christos Tzolis arrived. A left-sided forward who beats defenders one-on-one and finishes himself remained the gap in the squad, and Vinicius was the market’s answer to it.

Valuation was where the two sides did not align. Football365 reported that Real Madrid wanted €170 million and that Arsenal were inclined to do a deal below €150 million, though neither figure was confirmed by either club. Arsenal have meanwhile completed the bulk of their midfield business, with Bruno Guimaraes having passed a medical and agreed personal terms on a £75 million move from Newcastle. Real Madrid have committed a club-record fee to RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande. Both clubs have been active regardless of how this one lands.

It is also important to separate what was reported from what was verified. A claim circulated on July 31 that Arsenal had agreed personal terms with Vinicius in principle. The player’s entourage denied it the following day, and Ornstein and The Athletic reported that no such agreement existed. Arsenal’s position throughout has been conditional: they expected to be able to agree terms if he decided against renewing.

What a Real Madrid Renewal Means for Both Clubs

A completed renewal closes the most realistic route to a marquee Arsenal signing this window, with the transfer deadline on August 31 and the Premier League season opening on August 22. Arsenal would begin their title defence with Guimaraes added and Tzolis the only new arrival in the forward line, and any further attacking move would have to come together quickly.

For Real Madrid, a renewal removes the risk that has driven the entire saga. Without a new deal, Vinicius could have opened pre-contract talks with clubs outside Spain from January and left for nothing in June 2027. Tying him down protects an asset the club has spent two years trying to keep, and it does so before the Champions League league phase begins on September 8. José Mourinho’s relationship with the player has been reported as a factor in his thinking.

How the Premier League Title Market Is Priced

Arsenal enter 2026-27 as defending champions and as favourites on Cloudbet’s 2026-27 Premier League outright winner board, priced at 2.57. Manchester City are next at 3.96 in their first season under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with Liverpool at 6.44, Chelsea at 7.92 and Manchester United at 8.42. Prices are correct at the time of writing and subject to movement.

A price of 2.57 implies roughly a 39 percent chance before adjusting for the margin built into every selection. That is a favourite’s price rather than a formality, and the gap back to Manchester City is narrow enough that a squad addition on either side would register in the market.

An outright at this stage represents a weighting of 38 matchdays of possible paths rather than a forecast of a single outcome, and it tends to move in steps. Prices adjust when information changes, such as a signing confirmed, a first-choice player ruled out, or a run of results that removes a rival. Between those events an outright can sit unchanged for weeks. A transfer reported as close and a transfer completed are priced differently, which is why registrations and announcements matter more to a market than headlines do.

A Vinicius renewal at Madrid is that kind of information. It removes a variable from Arsenal’s squad projection rather than adding one, and it does so with the season days away.

Whether Vinicius Junior signs his extension or the situation turns again, the market will reflect it as soon as it becomes official, and the Premier League season starts in the middle of it.
