What is League of Legends?
League of Legends (LoL) is a globally popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Riot Games. Released in 2009, it quickly became a cornerstone of competitive gaming and now stands as one of the most-played and most-watched esports titles in the world.
In a standard LoL match, two teams of five players each select from a roster of over 160 unique champions, each with distinct abilities and roles. The goal is to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus - the heart of their base - while defending your own. Matches typically last between 20 to 60 minutes and demand a blend of strategic coordination, mechanical skill, map awareness, and split-second decision-making.
What sets LoL apart is its vibrant competitive scene. The League of Legends World Championship - commonly called Worlds - is the pinnacle event held annually, bringing together elite teams from regional leagues such as the LCS (North America), LEC (Europe), LCK (Korea), and LPL (China). The tournament begins with Play-Ins and culminates in a Grand Final that attracts millions of viewers worldwide.
Beyond the professional stage, LoL remains deeply rooted in community play. With ranked ladders, amateur circuits, and consistent patch updates, it offers aspiring players numerous paths to climb and compete. As of 2023, League of Legends continues to average over 100 million active players each month, maintaining its legacy as a dominant force in both gaming and esports.
Worlds 2025 tournament format and dates
Because there are 17 teams, the tournament begins with a Play-In stage on October. 14, involving a best‑of‑5 series between the two “4th seed” teams from the LCK and LPL (based on their performance at MSI), to determine the final spot into the main field.
After that, 16 teams move into the Swiss Stage (October 15 to 25), where teams play in a Swiss‑system over multiple rounds. Teams that reach 3 wins advance, while those that incur 3 losses are eliminated.
The Knockout Stage (single-elimination, best‑of‑5) follows. Quarterfinals and semifinals run from October 28 to November 2 in Shanghai, with no week‑long break between rounds (i.e. quarterfinals flow directly into semis).
Finally, the Grand Final is scheduled for November 9 in Chengdu.
