Italy’s Serie A returns on August 19th, 2023.

Napoli is looking to repeat the dominance from last season that gave the club its first championship in 33 years. It was a thoroughly entertaining Serie A season that saw three Italian clubs make the quarter-finals of the Champions League, after years of unfulfilment, with one - Inter Milan - making it all the way to the final.

The adoration for Italian football has returned. “Calcio is back,” the legendary Fabio Capello proclaimed in a Serie A advertisement recently.

It certainly is. And we will be following season 2023/24 closely.

The Italian Serie A 23/24 Season

Is Italian football really back? Well, three teams certainly are - back in the Serie A, that is.

Frosinone, Genoa, and Cagliari won promotion to top-flight football after their Serie B performances last season. They replace the relegated Spezia, Cremonese, and Sampdoria. Frosinone returned to the Serie A after a four-year absence, whilst Genoa and Cagliari are both back after a year away.

Italian Serie A 23/24: Favorites

  • Inter Milan: (2.83/+183 betting odds - favorite)
The Nerazzuri represented Italian pride in the Champions League last season all the way to the finals, in which they succumbed to Manchester City. While Inter has lost a couple of key players in goalie Andre Onana and midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, Marcus Thuram looks to be a shrewd signing, and Davide Mattesi offers potential. Lautaro Martinez up front promises buckets of goals and is a contender for top goalscorer (see below).

  • Napoli: (3.8/+280  betting odds – second favorite)
Last year’s Scudetto winners may have trouble repeating their championship run after losing some key players, not least defender Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich. Still, goal tyro Victor Osimhen continues to grow in confidence and they still have Georgian winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, one of the Serie A and Europe’s newest stars. “Kvaradona” won the 2022/23 Serie A MVP award, scoring 12 goals and assisting 10 in the league. Retaining these two stars gives Napoli some hope of winning the league again.

  • Juventus: (4.48/+348  betting odds – third favorite)
The Bianconeri can only look forward after a disastrous season marred by league penalties for the club’s capital gains misadventures, which also saw them banned from UEFA competitions this season. Some might say this allows Juve to focus entirely on the domestic competition, where they will be gunning for at least a top-four finish. Tim Weah is the incoming player to watch as he looks to inject some life into a demoralized squad, and will slot straight into the right wing to replace outgoing Juan Cuadrado.

Serie A 23/24 season line-ups

There have been some interesting new signings in the run-up to this season of the Serie A. Here’s who to watch:

  • Tim Weah - Juventus
Almost three decades after Ballon d’Or winner George Weah left Milan, his son Tim has made the move from Lille. The younger Weah plays for the US national team and has tasted championship success twice in France’s Ligue 1.

  • Marcus Thuram - Inter Milan
Inter has also recruited a son of a famous dad, bringing in Lilian Thuram’s son from Borussia Monchengladbach. The French national scored a career-best 16 goals in his final injury-marred Bundesliga season.
  • Houssem Aouar - Roma
The 25-year-old comes to the Serie A from Lyon, where he was born and played all his professional football. He is an attacking midfielder known for his versatility and technical ability.
  • Evan Ndicka - Roma
The Ivorian national played his last five years with Eintracht Frankfurt and was a key component of the Bundesliga team’s frequent Europa Cup campaigns. The center-back was part of Eintracht’s Europa Cup-winning squad in 2020-21.

Key players: Top goalscorers

  • Victor Osimhen - Napoli (2.50/+150 betting odds - top goalscorer)
Uncertainty had swirled around the Nigerian national recently, who was said to have been unsettled by a change in club managers. Napoli’s owner subsequently offered to make him the club’s highest-paid player, locking in one of Europe’s best center forwards for three more years. The striker clinched the Serie A golden boot last season with 26 goals, making him the first African player to win the title.

  • Lautaro Martinez - Inter Milan (3/+200 betting odds - top goalscorer)
The Argentina and Inter captain will again look to surpass Victor Ohimsen after narrowly losing out on Capocannoniere honors to his Napoli rival. Named by TNT Sports as the most valuable Argentinian in world football, Martinez scored the goal that took Inter to the Champions League final last season.

  • Ciro Immobile - Lazio (7/+600 betting odds - top goalscorer)
The Lazio captain will be looking for vindication after scoring only 12 goals last season, his lowest tally since joining the club in 2016, and only his second time finishing with fewer than 20.
