Previewing the Italian Serie A 22/23 Season

Few would have picked 5th-favorites AC Milan to claim the title at the beginning of the 2021/22 Serie A season. Milan pegged back an early Inter Milan surge to end the season as champions and make it 19 titles apiece between the two adversaries.

The two Milan clubs are likely to be tested by a rejuvenated Juventus side looking to end a three-season Scudetto drought. Juve have recruited well this summer under former manager Massimiliano Allegri and start the season as second favorites behind Inter Milan.

Key Teams at The Top

Inter Milan and Juventus are the two big favorites to claim the Serie A championship in the 22/23 season. Both sides have strengthened in the summer and should be in the title mix during the run-in.

Defending champions AC Milan will be the third favorites having yet to make a splash in the transfer market, followed by dark horses Roma and Napoli.

Inter Milan: (2.61 betting odds - favorite)

Inter Milan came desperately close to defending their league title last season, but an AC Milan victory on the final day sealed their fate as runners up.

Emboldened by a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana double of Juventus, Inter begin the Serie A 22/23 season as favorite to claim the title.

The club will be relieved to welcome back Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian banged in 23 goals and 24 goals across two seasons for Inter. The squad has also been bolstered by the addition of free transfers Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Andre Onana.

There are still question marks over whether manager Simone Inzaghi has replaced departing stars Arturo Vidal and Ivan Perisic effectively, but Inter look ready to fight tooth and nail to reclaim the title.

Juventus: (2.64 betting odds – second favorite)

Experienced boss Massimiliano Allegri was lured back to steady the ship at Juventus but arguably took the club a step-back last season. While Champions League football was secured with a 4th-place finish, Juve disappointed in Europe and left the Coppa Italia final empty-handed.

The Turin-based outfit haven’t won the Serie A title since the 2019/20 season, fired by 31 goals from Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo. For the first time in over a decade, Juventus failed to take home any major honors at all last season.

Allegri has overseen a summer of major change following the departure of first-teamers Giorgio Chiellini, Paulo Dybala, Matthijs De Ligt and Federico Bernardeschi.

Coming in, Juve have re-signed midfield maestro Paul Pogba, swooped for free agent Angel Di Maria and sealed a permanent deal for Italian sensation Federico Chiesa.

AC Milan: (4.60 betting odds – third favorite)

Defending champions AC Milan kick off the Serie A season as third favorites, with many feeling last year’s heroics won’t be replicated.

Milan finished the season on a 16-game unbeaten streak, including a final run of 6 straight wins, to accomplish an epic title triumph over an Inter side that had looked unstoppable by mid-season.

While the team’s attacking threat ranked as the 4th-best in the league last season, Milan’s consistent back five will play a key role should they mount an credible title challenge.

AC Milan haven’t made too many exciting moves in the transfer market this summer. Along with Liverpool forward Divock Origi, Milan made a £29 million swoop for Belgian prospect Charles De Ketelaere and welcome back loanee Yacine Adli to replace Franck Kessie.

The key players (Bet now with Cloudbet)

Romelu Lukaku – Inter Milan

After a disappointing year at Chelsea which saw him return just 8 league goals, Belgian powerhouse Romelu Lukaku will return to Inter Milan looking to replicate his first successful spell in Italy.

Lukaku netted 23 goals on his debut 2019-2020 season followed by a 24-goal haul the year after. On the strength of his first spell with Inter, Lukaku will begin the season as the top scorer betting favorite.

Fikayo Tomori - AC Milan

A rock at the heart of the Milan defence, Fikayo Tomori established himself as one of the most dynamic young defenders in Europe last season.

With AC Milan topping the league clean sheets charts last season, Tomori will look to continue his elite performances that have earned him a call-up to the England national team.

Paul Pogba - Juventus

Based on his national team performances, Paul Pogba is one of the best central midfielders in world football. However, his form at club level has been sporadic, with the Frenchman returning just four league goals in the past two seasons at Manchester United.

Pogba is in his prime at 29 years old and will hope to recapture the form of his early Juventus days. Should Juve utilize him in his favored advanced midfield role, fans can expect a Pogba at the peak of his powers.

Talking Points This Season

The Top Four Race - Roma, Napoli, Atalanta

Tipped to join Juventus and the two Milan clubs in the top four this season are Roma, Napoli and Atalanta.

Roma (2.14)

Jose Mourinho’s Roma outfit find themselves above last season’s 3rd-placed Napoli side following a strong end to the season as Europa Conference League winners. In his first season at the club, the controversial Portugese manager has already achieved Roma’s first piece of silverware since 2008.

The Rome side have made key recruitments this season in the form of creative forward Paulo Dybala and the reliable Nemanja Matic. With Mourinho’s proven winning mentality driving the squad, expect Roma to be in the mix for a Top 4 finish or better.

Napoli (2.40)

Surging to a 3rd-place finish last season, Napoli have what it takes to mount another run at the Top 4 whilst staying busy in the Champions League. The Blues were the third-highest scoring team in Serie A last season, fueled by clinical performances from Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen.

There have been wholesale changes across the squad, including several experienced names exiting the club. Seniors David Ospina, Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and Kalidou Koulibaly have departed, leaving the club short on star names.

Atalanta (2.96)

Atalanta drew attention over the 2020/21 season for their free-flowing attacking football, finishing the Serie A season in 3rd place and as the league’s top scorers. However, a disappointing 8th place finish last season made Atalanta miss out on European competition altogether.

Despite this, there is excitement around the club this season after shrewd forays into the market. Standout Serie A performers Jeremie Boga, Ederson and Merih Demiral have joined this summer for under £60 million in total.

Future Stars to Watch

Pierre Kalulu - AC Milan

While Fikayo Tomori took many of the plaudits for AC Milan’s standout defensive record, 22-year-old Pierre Kalulu had an exceptional season alongside him.

Capable of playing centrally or on the right, Kalulu showed wisdom beyond his years to guide Milan to their first title in 11 years.

Dusan Vlahovic - Juventus

Serbian goalscorer Dusan Vlahovic has shown glimpses of his exceptional talent in his half-season at Juventus following a big money January move.

The 22-year-old begins the season as the second favorite to take the top scorer accolade after a return of 24 league goals for Fiorentina and Juventus last season.

Giorgio Scalvini - Atalanta

Italian defender Giorgio Scalvini could be the latest in a long line of Italian defensive geniuses after a series of exceptional performances for Atalanta last season.

The 18-year-old has already been capped at the highest national level and is likely to see regular game time this season.
