Introduction: The latest start in Europe’s Big Five

La Liga is the first of Europe’s top five leagues to begin in 2026-27. The Bundesliga sits at the other end of the calendar, starting on August 28 after the DFL delayed the campaign by one week because of the World Cup.

Germany also has the shortest domestic league schedule of the Big Five. Eighteen teams play 34 matches each, rather than the 38 played in England, Spain, Italy, and France. There is also a winter pause after Matchday 14, with the final pre-Christmas round played December 18-20 and Bundesliga action returning on January 8.

What to watch on opening weekend

Bayern vs. Stuttgart launches the season on Friday, August 28, before the other eight matches are played across Saturday and Sunday.

The Bayern-Stuttgart opener has additional history behind it. Bayern beat Stuttgart in the Supercup and DFB Cup during 2025-26, then defeated them again on Matchday 30 to secure the Bundesliga title.

How dominant were Bayern last season?

Very.

Bayern finished 16 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, losing only once in 34 league games. They scored 122 goals, breaking the Bundesliga’s single-season record, while Harry Kane scored 36 and Michael Olise supplied a league-high 19 assists.

Vincent Kompany remains in charge, and Bayern have added further depth this summer while retaining the core of the team that produced those numbers. Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown are among the additions, while Leon Goretzka and Raphaël Guerreiro have departed.

Dortmund are the obvious first challenger after improving to 73 points in Niko Kovač’s first full season. Their squad has changed more significantly, with Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt among the departures and several younger players arriving.

Leipzig are harder to assess. They finished third but still replaced Ole Werner with Martín Demichelis, while major summer departures include Yan Diomande, Xaver Schlager, and Péter Gulácsi. That creates more uncertainty around a team that finished 24 points behind Bayern last season.

Betting on Bayern: look beyond the match winner

What about the promoted teams?

The three newcomers deserve different assessments in the relegation market.

• Schalke: won Bundesliga 2 with 70 points and conceded only 31 goals, at least eight fewer than any other team. They have retained most of the promotion-winning squad and added further Bundesliga experience.
• Elversberg: finished second with 62 points and led Bundesliga 2 with 64 goals. This is their first Bundesliga season, but they have recruited from several established top-flight clubs after rising from the fourth tier in only four years.
• Paderborn: also finished on 62 points before beating Wolfsburg in the promotion playoff. Their form was less consistent, and more than 10 summer arrivals have created a heavily changed squad.

They replace St. Pauli, Heidenheim, and Wolfsburg. St. Pauli and Heidenheim finished in the automatic relegation places, while 16th-place Wolfsburg lost the playoff to Paderborn.

There is also useful historical context for survival bets: only five of the 15 promoted clubs across the previous seven seasons were immediately relegated.

Bundesliga goals markets

The Bundesliga’s high-scoring reputation was certainly justified in 2025-26.

The 18 clubs combined for 990 goals across 306 matches, an average of approximately 3.24 goals per game. Bayern alone scored 122, Stuttgart 71, Dortmund 70, and Leverkusen 68.

That makes several markets particularly relevant:

• Over/under 2.5 or 3.5 goals
• Both teams to score
• Team goal totals
• Anytime goalscorers
• First-half and second-half goal totals

Harry Kane also starts 2026-27 after winning his third consecutive Bundesliga top-scorer award, scoring 36 league goals last season.

The strongest totals bets still come from the individual matchup. Bayern scoring 122 and St. Pauli scoring 29 in the same competition shows how misleading a league-wide average can become when applied indiscriminately.
