Bundesliga: Round 25 - RB Leipzig look to keep title race tight

With what should be a straight-forward victory this weekend for the league leaders, second-place RB Leipzig need to beat fourth-placed Frankfurt to ensure the two-horse race at the top of the table remains tight.

Round 25 action

Bayern Munich’s incredible comeback in Der Klassiker last weekend has kept them in control of the title race, and despite still being just two points clear of RB Leipzig, they will have gained huge momentum from this game.

Dortmund raced into a two-goal lead within ten minutes, courtesy of Erling Haaland, only for the hosts to pull level before half-time and then score twice in the final few minutes to complete the turnaround.

RB Leipzig’s 3-0 win at Freiburg was an excellent result to keep them close, while dropped points for Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg ensure this is now definitely a two-horse race.

Here are three previews of upcoming games this weekend.

Werder Bremen v Bayern Munich

Werder Bremen have not enjoyed a particularly good season, although they are currently undefeated in four league games. However, generally their form has been very up and down, with a fairly unsuccessful counter-attacking formation only really working when up against a team below them in the table. This shouldn’t be a difficult game for the current league leaders.

Bayern have now won back-to-back games, suggesting they are over that little wobble that allowed Leipzig back in, and so Robert Lewandowski - the hat-trick hero against Dortmund - is probably expecting to score a couple against some fairly tame opponents. Flick’s side have scored 14 goals in their last three games across all competitions; they should win very comfortably here.

Back Bayern to win with a -1 handicap.

RB Leipzig v Eintracht Frankfurt

Leipzig have now scored three goals in each of their last three Bundesliga games, and while things have been far more complicated for Julian Nagelsmann’s side in Europe, there are no signs of them slowing down domestically. Christopher Nkunku has been in excellent form, combining neatly with Angelino on the left to cause problems for their the opposition.

Having had an outstanding season so far, after consecutive winless games Frankfurt seem to be loosening their grip on the top four just enough for pundits to begin to wonder if they are regressing to their mean. Their conservative, counter-attacking football has been just the right style for this exhausting season, but the goals are beginning to dry up. What’s more, Frankfurt have looked particularly poor on their right side, and in each of their last two they have found it difficult playing against a back three.

Leipzig, in a 3-4-2-1 formation, should be able to target Frankfurt’s weak right side via Nkunku and Angelino - who didn't play midweek against Liverpool - to record an important win and keep the title race tight.

Back Leipzig to win.

Borussia Dortmund v Hertha Berlin

The defeat to Bayern was badly timed for Dortmund, having looked as if they were back on track after back-to-back victories. Things look much worse now for Edin Terzic’s team, who have won two of their last five in the league, although Hertha Berlin should offer them a comfortable three points.

Dortmund aren’t very good when attacked directly, at which point their shaky system can collapse, whereas against more defensive opposition the raw power of Jadon Sancho and Haaland tends to find a way through. Hertha beat Augsburg 2-1 last weekend in a huge result in their fight against relegation, but that upturn surely will not continue against Dortmund’s firepower.

Back Dortmund to win with a -1 handicap.
