Previewing the League of Legends 2022 World Championship

Last year’s League of Legends Worlds in Reykjavik saw Chinese team EDward Gaming triumph as the somewhat outsiders, defeating Korean side DWG KIA 3-2 in an epic final to take home almost $500,000.

This continued China’s dominance in the Worlds, with three of the last four champions hailing out of China. As expected, Chinese and Korean teams dominate the favorites list this year - the likes of JD Gaming, Gen.G, Top Esports, T1, DWG KIA and DRX join incumbent champions EDward Gaming as favorites.

The tournament involves 24 teams selected via geographical region:

4 from China - JD Gaming, Top Esports, EDward Gaming, Royal Never Give Up

4 from Korea - Gen.G, T1, DWG KIA, DRX

4 from Europe - Rogue, G2 Esports, Fnatic, MAD Lions

3 from North America - Cloud9, 100 Thieves, Evil Geniuses

2 from PCS (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia) - CTBC Flying Oyster, Beyond Gaming

2 from Vietnam - GAM Esports, Saigon Buffalo

1 from Brazil - LOUD

1 from Japan - DetonatioN FocusMe

1 from Latin America - Isurus

1 from Oceania - Chiefs Esports Club

1 from Turkey - Istanbul Wildcats

Who Will Win It - League of Legends Worlds 2022

JD Gaming sweeps world champions FunPlus Phoenix out of the LPL Spring Playoffs - Inven Global

JD Gaming

JD Gaming will be the pick for many to win the League of Legends Worlds 2022. The Chinese team enter the tournament in fantastic form following success at the LPL Summer Playoffs 2022 in September.

Jungle-mid partners Yagao and Kanavi will join stars like ‘369’ to fire JD Gaming to its first-ever Worlds success. The furthers JD have ever got was a Quarter Final finish at the Worlds 2020 - they will be one of the favorites to win the entire tournament in 2022.

T1

T1 is eager to recapture its indomitable form from its LCK 2022 Spring Season after going on a perfect run to claim the title. Having made it to the Semi Final at the Worlds 2021, T1 also just missed out at the MSI 2022 following a defeat in the final to Royal Never Give Up.

Look out for Choi ‘Zeus’ Woo-je, who claimed an impressive 11 Player of the Game awards during the recent LCK 2022 Summer Season. With its elite roster, also boasting talent like Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok and Lee ‘Gumayusi’ Min-hyeong, expect T1 to build momentum as the tournament deepens.

Gen.G

Fresh off a dominant summer season performance, Gen.G are one of the hot betting picks at this year’s Worlds. The Korean side dominated T1 with a 3-0 victory in the LCK Summer Final and look unbeatable at the minute.

A lot will hinge on the performance of LCK 2022 Summer Triple Crown star Park ‘Ruler’ Jae-hyuk, who carries many of the team’s victories. However, strong support from teammates ‘Peanut’ and ‘Chovy’ will be necessary if Gen.G is to better its Semi-Final finish at the Worlds 2021.

Gen.G triumphed in the LCK 2022 Summer Season with a 17-1 start and perfect playoff performance - don’t bet against the dynamic side to maintain its momentum at the Worlds 2022.

Underdog Picks - Outside Chances for the Worlds 2022

LoL: EDward Gaming rompe su maldición y estará en las semifinales de los Worlds 2021 - Millenium

EDward Gaming

Chinese outfit EDG were the League of Legends World Championship 2021 winners but find themselves as an outside bet this year. Long-time player Scout will be joined by fellow Korean Viper once again as EDward Gaming try to become the first team to win back-to-back Worlds.

While rival teams enter the tournament on far stronger form, EDG have proven championship mettel and could easily turn it on when it matters most.

DRX

DRX enter this year’s Worlds as the dark horses despite a disappointing LCK 2022 Summer Season. While the team has clear star power in Zeka and Deft, supporting players will need to show up if DRX stands a chance this year.

As a fairly inexperienced team during the all-important Knockout Stages, DRX would provide one of the tournament’s biggest shocks if they went all the way this year.

The League of Legends Worlds 2022 Schedule

The LoL Worlds 2022 will kick off on September 29th with the Play-In Stage hosted at Arena Esports Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico.

Play-In Stage - September 29th to October 4th - Mexico City

12 teams will have the chance to impress during the week-long Play-In Stage hosted in Mexico. During this stage, 8 teams will find themselves eliminated and the remaining 4 will progress to the Group Stage.

The Play-In Group Stage will involve two groups - Group A and Group B - consisting of six teams each. All matches are best-of-one in a single round-robin format. This will be followed by the Play-In Knockout Stage on October 3rd-4th.

The group winners will progress automatically to the Group Stage proper on October 7th. Teams in 3rd and 4th place will play each other before a playoff final against the runners-up of each group.

Group Stage - October 7th to October 16th - New York

The Worlds 2022 Group Stage will go down on October 7th in New York City as 16 teams compete to advance into the Knockout Stage. There will be 4 groups of 4 teams each placed according to their tournament seeding.

Knockout Stage - October 20th to November 5th - New York, Atlanta and San Francisco

The first knockout rounds will take place during the Quarter Finals on October 20th between the remaining 8 sides. All matches during the Knockout Stage will be best-of-five.
