Asian handicaps take an outcome with multiple possibilities and boil down your options to two decisions. It’s a binary market. Asian handicaps are available in numerous soccer markets but we’ll focus on full time results for the sake of this article. Once you understand the basics, you can apply your knowledge to any time you see Asian Handicaps displayed.
Ordinarily when you place a bet on soccer results, you’d choose between win, lose or draw. When it comes to full time results, Asian handicaps remove the possibility of a draw. You have two betting options, home or away. Each team is weighted based on a number of factors such as previous form, player availability and historical form to name a few. These factors combine to provide a weighted “handicap” that gives the underdog an advantage and the favourite a handicap.
There are different types of Asian handicap bets ranging from quarter goal to whole goal. These give you an idea of the team advantage over one another but also tell you how your bet is being placed. The result and handicap bet could mean winning your bet entirely, getting your entire stake refunded, winning half and getting half your stake refunded, or losing. Not sure what we mean? Here are the main Asian handicap options you’ll see at Cloudbet.
Asian handicap 0.25
With this option, the game starts with the score of 0 - 0.25 (1/4 goal handicaps). The underdog team has the advantage of a quarter goal prior to kick off. With any quarter definition of Asian Handicaps, you’re essentially placing two bets.
Example: Newcastle United +0.25 vs Tottenham Hotspur -0.25
You bet on Tottenham Hotspur to win -0.25. To win your bet, you need them to win the game.
If they do win, you win at the stated odds.
Because this bet is a quarter ball Asian handicap, if it ends in a draw, you lose half your stakes and the other half is returned to your account.
If Newcastle United win the game, you lose your stake.
On the other hand, if you bet on Newcastle United to win, they have a 0.25 goal advantage. So in order to win your bet, Newcastle United must win the game.
If they did, you’d win at the stated odds.
If a draw happens, remember your bet means that Newcastle United will be ahead, you get half of your stake back and win the other half at the stated odds.
Asian handicap 0.5
In this case, the game starts with the score of 0 - 0.5 (a half goal handicap). The underdog team has the advantage of a half goal prior to kick off. This option removes the possibility of receiving money back if the favourite draws. You will win or lose your entire wager as it’s not possible for a team to score half a goal.
Example: Manchester City -0.5 vs Arsenal +0.5
You bet on Manchester City to win with -0.5 Asian Handicap. This indicates they have the benefit. To win your bet, you need Manchester City to win the game. A lead over Arsenal of at least one goal ensures that despite the handicap, they’re ahead. In any other eventuality, you lose your money.
- If Manchester City win, you win your bet.
- If Arsenal win or the game ends in a draw, you lose your stake.
What about the other way?
You bet on Arsenal to win. They have +0.5 Asian Handicap. To win your bet, you need them to win or draw at the end of the game.
However if Manchester City win the game, you lose your bet.
Asian handicap 0.75
If you see this displayed, the game starts with the score of 0 - 0.75 (3/4 goal handicap). The underdog team has the advantage of a three-quarter goal prior to kick off. Though it’s another quarter goal handicap so you’re effectively placing two bets, it’s slightly different to 0.25.
Example: Real Madrid -0.75 vs Atletico Madrid +0.75
You bet on Atletico Madrid to win with +0.75 handicap. To win your bet, you need them to win or draw the game.
If Atletico win or draw the game, you win your entire bet.
- However if Real Madrid win by 1 goal, you lose half your stake and the other half is returned.
- If Real Madrid win the game by 2 or more goals you lose your whole stake.
On the other hand, if you bet on Real Madrid with -0.75 handicap you need them to win by two or more goals to win your entire bet.
If Real Madrid win by 1 goal, you get half of your stake back and win the other half at the stated odds. If the game ends drawn or Atletico Madrid win by any margin, you lose your bet.
Asian handicap -1
In this case, the game starts with the score of 1-0. Because it’s a whole goal advantage, there is a possibility of having your stake refunded.
Example: Manchester United -1 vs Leicester City +1
In this example, if you bet on Manchester United to win with a -1 handicap, to win your bet, you need them to win by 2 or more goals. They started the game down one goal.
If they win by this margin, you win your entire bet. If they only win by one goal you get your entire stake back. It’s effectively a Draw No Bet.
If the game draws or Leicester City win, you lose all your stake. As the handicap won’t have been overturned.
On the other hand if you bet on Leicester City to win with +1, to win your bet, you need them to win or draw.
- If the game ends draw or Leicester win, you win at the stated odds.
- If they lose by one goal, you get your entire stake back.
If Manchester United win by 2 or more, you lose your bet. They’d have overturned the handicap.
Additional Asian Handicaps
When teams can’t be split, you’ll see both teams with 0 next to them. This is known as “pick ‘em” and means in the event of a draw, you’ll get your stake back. No team has an advantage over the other. The odds will be slimmer but your risk is substantially lower.
You may also see different variations of Asian Handicaps on Cloudbet depending on how big the gulf in class. They’ll look like combinations of these Asian Handicaps, for example: -1.75 or +2.25. But the premise of working out the risk and potential winnings is exactly the same.
